MOSES Modules

MOSES is a joint facility developed by the Helmholtz Centres in the research field “Earth and Environment”. The Centres provide observing systems which are combined into “modules”. Hence, the facility follows a “system of systems” approach. MOSES modules are designed to operate across the Earth’s compartments, covering marine, terrestrial and atmospheric processes. All modules are developed for flexible operations at various events and regions. The modules must meet the challenging requirements that arise in event-driven observation campaigns:

  • They must be highly mobile
  • They must cover a large range of observation scales with respect to space and time
  • They must deliver high-resolution data in space and time
  • They must be operable in a wide range of applications

List of MOSES Modules

The modules are primarily designed for short-term operation during event-driven observation campaigns. These demands require the development of novel observing systems as well as the improvement of existing systems. The technical developments necessary to set up MOSES modules will focus on:

  • Minimization of sensors for installation on mobile carriers and building multi-sensor systems
  • Automation of observing systems for intensive field campaigns and for use in areas that are difficult to access
  • Development of low-cost systems to achieve high spatial and temporal coverage
  • Improvement and adjustment of existing observing systems for modular and multi-purpose use
